MCT Oil, Exogenous Ketones & Fasting FAQs
Whether you're experimenting with intermittent fasting, looking for an alternative fuel source, following a Keto lifestyle, or simply curious about MCTs and ketones, you've come to the right place. Below you'll find answers to some of the most common questions we receive about MCT Oil, MCT Powder, D-BHB Exogenous Ketones and fasting.
🥥 MCT Oil & MCT Powder
MCTs have become hugely popular supplements. From understanding the difference between oil and powder to when and how to use them, these FAQs cover the essentials.
What are MCTs?
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides - a type of fat that is absorbed and utilised differently from most dietary fats. Because MCTs are rapidly transported to the liver, they can be converted into ketones and used as a source of energy relatively quickly.
What's the difference between MCT Oil and MCT Powder?
Both provide MCTs, but in different formats.
MCT Oil is a pure liquid oil that can be added to drinks, smoothies and foods.
MCT Powder contains MCT Oil that has been dried into a convenient powder. Many people find powders easier to mix into hot drinks and shakes, and some find them gentler on digestion.
The active ingredient is still MCTs - the choice largely comes down to personal preference.
What's special about C8 MCT?
MCTs come in different chain lengths. C8 (Caprylic Acid) is generally considered the most ketogenic MCT because it is converted into ketones more efficiently than longer-chain MCTs.
Our MCT Oil and MCT Powder use pure C8 MCTs.
Will MCTs put me into ketosis?
MCTs can increase ketone production and raise circulating ketone levels, but they don't guarantee nutritional ketosis.
Your overall diet, activity levels, carbohydrate intake and individual metabolism all play important roles.
When is the best time to take MCTs?
MCTs can increase ketone production and raise circulating ketone levels, but they don't guarantee nutritional ketosis.
Your overall diet, activity levels, carbohydrate intake and individual metabolism all play important roles.
Can I cook with MCT Oil?
MCT Oil is best used in drinks, shakes, dressings and foods added after cooking.
It is not generally recommended for high-temperature frying.
Why does MCT Oil sometimes cause stomach upset?
MCTs are absorbed quickly, which can occasionally lead to digestive discomfort if taken in large amounts.
If you're new to MCTs, start with a small serving and gradually increase over time.
⚡ D-BHB Exogenous Ketones
Exogenous ketones can be a confusing topic, especially with so many claims and technical terms. Here we answer the most common questions about D-BHB ketones, how they work, and how people use them.
What are exogenous ketones?
Exogenous ketones are ketones that come from an external source rather than being produced by your body.
They provide beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the primary ketone body used for energy during ketosis.
What does D-BHB mean?
BHB exists in two forms: D-BHB and L-BHB.
D-BHB is the form naturally produced by the human body and the form most readily used as an energy source.
Keto-Pro D-BHB products use D-BHB ketones.
Do I need to follow a Keto diet to use exogenous ketones?
Any time you’re losing fluids or shifting your metabolism. That includes exercise, sweating, hot weather, illness, travel, or changes in diet - particularly when reducing carbohydrate intake.
Will exogenous ketones put me into ketosis?
Exogenous ketones raise blood ketone levels because you're consuming ketones directly.
However, this is different from achieving ketosis through carbohydrate restriction. The two are related, but not identical concepts.
How quickly do ketones work?
Because ketones are consumed directly, blood ketone levels can rise relatively quickly after consumption.
Individual responses will vary.
What's the best time to take D-BHB?
Common times include:
- Before exercise
- During fasting periods
- First thing in the morning
- During periods of mental focus
- Any time you want a convenient source of ketones
Are ketones a replacement for a healthy diet?
No.
Exogenous ketones are a supplement, not a substitute for a balanced diet, good sleep, hydration and healthy lifestyle habits.
🤝 MCTs and Ketones Together
MCTs and exogenous ketones are often mentioned in the same conversation, but they're not the same thing. This section explains how they differ, how they complement one another, and whether using both makes sense.
Can I take MCTs and D-BHB together?
Yes.
Many people choose to combine them as they work differently.
MCTs encourage your body to produce ketones, while D-BHB provides ketones directly.
Which should I take first?
There is no strict rule.
Some people take them together, while others use MCTs daily and reserve D-BHB for specific situations such as fasting, exercise or periods of increased mental demand.
Do MCTs and ketones do the same thing?
Not exactly.
MCTs are a fat source that can be converted into ketones.
D-BHB ketones are already ketones and can be utilised directly.
Although they are often used together, they are different products with different mechanisms.
Do I need both?
Not necessarily.
Some people prefer MCTs, some prefer ketones, and many enjoy incorporating both into their routine.
The right approach depends on your goals, lifestyle and personal preferences.
⏱️ Fasting
Many people use MCTs and ketones alongside intermittent fasting, but questions often arise around what does and doesn't break a fast. Here we explore some of the most common fasting-related queries.
Can I take MCT Oil while fasting?
This depends on your goals.
If your goal is a strict water fast with zero calories, MCT Oil would break that fast because it contains calories.
However, many people practising intermittent fasting choose to use MCT Oil during fasting windows as part of their personal routine.
Can I take MCT Powder while fasting?
The same principle applies.
MCT Powder contains calories and would technically break a strict fast, although some intermittent fasters still choose to include it.
Can I take exogenous ketones while fasting?
Exogenous ketones contain calories and would generally be considered to break a strict fast.
However, many people use ketones during fasting periods as part of a more flexible fasting approach.
What's the difference between a strict fast and a flexible fast?
A strict fast typically involves consuming no calories.
A flexible fasting approach may allow certain supplements, beverages or functional ingredients depending on the individual's goals and preferences.
Can MCTs and ketones be used during intermittent fasting?
Many people choose to use both as part of their intermittent fasting routine.
Whether they fit your approach depends on your personal goals and how you define your fasting window.
Should I take MCTs or ketones before breaking a fast?
Many people enjoy using MCTs or ketones towards the end of a fasting period or before their first meal, although there is no universally correct approach.
Experimentation and consistency are often the best guides.
What should I prioritise during fasting?
Regardless of your approach, hydration remains important.
Ensuring adequate fluid and electrolyte intake may help support comfort and adherence during fasting periods.
