Understanding Keto

A simple introduction to our low-carb roots

Keto-Pro was founded during the rise of the ketogenic movement, and many of our wonderful customers are exploring Keto and other carbohydrate-restricted lifestyles. As Keto-Pro has evolved, our range has expanded — with supplements at the core, supported by thoughtfully selected lower-carbohydrate alternatives.

This page offers a simple overview.

What Is Keto?

The ketogenic diet is a way of eating that significantly reduces carbohydrate intake and increases dietary fat. When carbohydrate intake is low enough, the body shifts from using glucose as its primary fuel source to producing molecules called ketones from fat. This metabolic state is known as ketosis.

Many people choose a ketogenic approach for reasons such as:

  • Weight management
  • Stable energy levels
  • Reduced snacking
  • Personal preference

A ketogenic approach has helped many people take greater control of their nutrition. Like any strategy, it works best when it’s informed and intentional.

From day one, Keto-Pro has been about making better nutrition simpler. Our Keto shopping list has helped thousands of customers along the way, and it remains a genuinely useful guide for anyone exploring low-carb or Keto living.

How Many Carbs?

Strict ketogenic approaches often involve consuming fewer than 20g of carbohydrates per day, while others adopt a more moderate low-carb intake.

Packaged foods display carbohydrate values per serving, and many online resources can help estimate carb content in whole foods.

What Do People Typically Eat?

Keto and low-carb diets generally prioritise:

  • Meat, fish and eggs
  • Dairy products
  • Non-starchy vegetables
  • Natural fats such as olive oil, butter or ghee

Highly processed, carbohydrate-dense foods are typically reduced.

There are many variations of low-carb eating, and people often adapt the approach to suit their goals and lifestyle.

What About Electrolytes?

When carbohydrate intake is reduced, some people experience temporary symptoms such as fatigue or headaches as their body adapts. This is sometimes referred to as “Keto flu”.

Maintaining adequate hydration and electrolyte intake - particularly sodium, potassium and magnesium - may help support this transition.

This is one of the reasons electrolyte supplementation became an early focus for Keto-Pro.
